. >>> president obama gives his first major interview since his debate performance that helped mitt romney close the spread in several battleground states. the president called in to the tom joiner radio show vowing, quote, more activity next time around and offering up a candid assessment of what he thinks went wrong. >> the debate, i think, it's fair to say i was just too poli polite. because, you know, it's hard to sometimes just keep saying what you're saying. it gets repeptive. >> another interview getting attention this hour. if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen or the sand box as ann romney is saying. in an interview of her own, she reacts to the president and supporters accusing her president of lying in last week's performance of last week's debate. >> it is sort of like someone, you know, in the sand box that lost the game and just going to kick sand in someone's face and say you liar. it is like they lost. and so now they say, we didn't like the game. >>> and tomorrow night's vp debate is expected to be no child's play in any sandbox. joe biden and paul ryan schedu

>> i've heard from republicans who are privy to mitt romney's debate preparations yes it will be mitt romney who will try to turn every answer he can back to the my. i heard people close to president obama's campaign that he'll try do that too because he has to pivot to a closing message and he needs to start talking about the economy. of course we've seen economic indicators over the past couple of weeks that actually look pretty good for the economy so i expect that president obama will play those up too. but it's going mitt romney who will want to talk more about the economy. >> i want to bring in reince preibus, chairman of the republican committee. good morning. lot to get. a line we keep hearing is that mitt romney was the first to politicize libya. if that comes up tonight how does he respond? >> you know, i think it's just a matter of what our view is of america in the world and northern africa and the middle east and i think that the problem that we have in libya is not trying to politicize a terrible tragedy because bad things do happen and that doesn't mean in and of itself

right now, we're already seeing that mitt romney is using personal stories in the debate of people he met on the campaign trail. and using them on the stump in states like florida, as he is doing this weekend. we are seeing a more energetic and happier mitt romney. and that is a good image for him. and of course, we're seeing ads come out about the debates on both sides and could stop a second look. but it should help, for now. >> so david, the second presidential debate, could it potentially erase all the talk like this. because the president is not going to be caught flat-footed the second time around, i'm guessing? >> i highly doubt it. he is very competitive. and when he is on his game he is very good. so i think what it does is raise expectations to a degree for romney. but also for the president, because all of us are expecting him to come back, come out with guns blazing, i think for romney the key is not that he needs to decisively win as he did in the first debate, but if he can hold his own and look as sharp as he did, then even with a good, strong president obama performanc

we're seeing a more confidence mitt romney on the trail. >> we had a little debate earlier this week and i enjoyed myself. you had the chance to hear his answers or non answers. now, of course, days later, we're hearing his excuses. >> but while the romney campaign body language has changed, both are anxiously awaiting the first good post debate polls. those will give us our first look at the race after the debate and the friday unemployment report. plus, where will romney be when the results of those polls begin to come in. will he be in coin flip races in places like ohio, iowa and wisconsin? where will the president's number be? still sitting at 49 or 50 or have fallen down to 47, 48? national tracks are one thing. battleground states are another. tuesday, romney stumps virginia, then ohio with chris christie in cuyahoga falls. in three straight rallies in florida, he recounted his memories of a 14-year-old boy, david, that he befriended with leukemia. >> i sat down next to him and he said what happens next? and i spoke with him about what i believe happens next. clear eyes, full
